Characteristics of A Successful Employee

Employers Want Committed Employees

To be a valued employee one needs to hold a status that an employer wants. For example, when a company is looking for an HVAC salesperson, they want that individual to have many characteristics. They can have the following but not limited to communication skills, knowledge on equipment being sold, continued education, integrity, and want work. There are many more qualities, but overall, a company wants someone who is committed to their job and can show that they know what they're doing. A well valued employee can make a company money and keep stress off managers when they are trusted and have integrity in their work.

7 Characteristics of Employability

After reviewing the Jeff Vankooten’s reading, I feel that the characteristics that relate to me the most are effective communication, continuous learning, and commitment to personal excellence. There

Effective Communication

Effective Communication is defined as “when a clear message is delivered” (Vankooten2013). Clear and Concise are important when communicating with others. I have had to ensure that all the information I was relying on from someone in my previous job had to be clearly d
elivered. When in the military and law enforcement, it is crucial to be able to ensure the message is sent to others as accurate and clear as possible because it could mean life or death. In the field I work in now with HVACR, I must be able to make sure a customer and my manager are informed about the job I am working on and ensure everyone is tracking what is going on. This will avoid any miscommunication and help complete a job sooner without too many delays. Effective communication is essential in the HVACR trade.

Continuous Learning

Continuous learning, “This never stops” (Vankooten2013), Jeff said this pretty well and it sums up this response. Always be willing to learn and I am always trying to be involved with anything new. I want to have the knowledge to work on as much equipment as I can and be ‘that guy’. I know some people say don’t be that guy is a bad thing but, in this context, I want to be the one that my managers will rely on be the one that others look to when they have issues with any kind on issue there is in my current trade. I love the job I am in now and troubleshooting is fun for me because it makes me learn so much more. I know that I will not know everything, but I can try. In the HVACR industry it is okay to call others to figure out an issue but if your company can trust you to do it on your own then you will become an asset to that company. Never stop learning.

Commitment to Personal Excellence

“Don’t settle for the second best” (Vankooten2013) To be the best at what you do takes a lot of time and effort. You cannot slack and be okay with not your best work. My job as an HVACR service technician, I see a lot of ‘half assed work’. I take pride in what I do mainly because I don’t like when my name is on a job and it is not pristine. I strive for excellence in my job from communicating with customers to the work I perform on their home. From my braze joints on a refrigerant line to cleaning up after a job, I want to make sure that what I do in another’s home is how I would treat my own. I ensure that when I put my name on a job it will be done right, and the customers are educated on the job.

My life

I am employed at a fast-growing HVAC company that has a good name. I also have a 5-star review rating from my customers. As an HVACR technician it is essential to have at minimum these three characteristics to be a successful employee in this trade. With any job you will need to be able to communicate clear and concise with others, you should always be willing to continue learning, and strive for nothing but your best work. This is what I live by every day and others should too.

Remember this!

Becoming the employee a company wants can help with increased trust and even pay. Know your job and be a professional at all times. If you need to work on communication skills or even how to perfect your work, all you need to do is practice. "Do less better"(unknown), this is what I heard a long time ago. I don't recall who said it nor when, but I like it. Be the best at the little things then take on more to perfect.

Final Question

What do you think makes a good employee? Do you agree with Jeff Vankooten 7 Characteristics of Employability?
